Historical Synopsis

For a number of years the Toronto Lithuanian Community Association of Toronto and Labdara Foundation, a registered charitable organization, had been planning to build a nursing home on the parking lot at the inter-section of Dorval and Edna streets just above the subway tunnel. However, too many problems delayed the implementation of this idea. When in 1997 the Lithuanian Franciscan Fathers decided to relocate their College St. premises to a new West end site near the Islington subway station, it became obvious, that a new location for the proposed nursing home would spark an invigorated effort to proceed with plans for building. As a result, Labdara Foundation and Resurrection Parish came to an agreement, whereby an 0.85 acre portion of land was to be leased to Labdara Foundation for the purpose of building the nursing home. Presently, the new long-term care home is located across from the Roman Catholic Parish of the Resurrection on the north side of Bloor St. W., between the Kipling and Islington subway stations. It has 54 single private rooms and 18 double occupancy basic rooms/shared washroom, that accommodate 36 residents for a total of 90 beds. Currently there are no respite, isolation or non-licensed bed rooms at Labdara. Labdara Lithuanian Nursing Home is the only Lithuanian Long-Term Care Home in Canada. It admitted its first resident on June 25, 2002.
